ANNAPOLIS, MD — Firefighters said an elderly woman sustained life-threatening injuries Tuesday after she became trapped in a fire at her townhouse. According to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, crews responded to a townhouse fire shortly around 12 p.m. on Compass Drive after neighbors noticed it and called 911. Once on scene, firefighters said they entered the home and quickly removed the woman, believed to be in her 80's, and extinguished a small fire that the residential sprinkler system had contained. Firefighters said the woman was treated by paramedics and transported to the burn center at Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital by a Maryland State Police helicopter. Paramedics transported a second patient to Anne Arundel Medical Center with minor injuries. It took firefighters approximately 20 minutes to control the fire. The Annapolis Fire Department also assisted. The Anne Arundel County Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit said it is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
