SEA CLIFF, NY — One person was seriously hurt and taken to a hospital after a fire broke out at a gas station in Sea Cliff over the weekend.
Nassau County police told Patch officers were called to a gas station near Glen Cove and Ransom Avenues around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. One person suffered serious burn injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was flown by police helicopter to a hospital.
The Sea Cliff Fire Department said the fire broke out in an underground tank at the gas station. Photos posted on the department's Facebook page appeared to show heavy smoke and orange flames shooting out of the ground next to a gas pump. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze, police said.
Chief William Koopmann arrived at the fire first and requested a foam trailer from the Glenwood Fire Co. to help extinguish the flames. Crews battled the inferno for about 1 1/2 hours.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office and Department of Environmental Conservation were called to the station to investigate. Nassau County police helped redirect traffic and evacuate nearby homes.
