North Shore Police Incident Causes Confusion At Glen Cove Schools

GLEN COVE, NY – Mistaken location information led to confusion Tuesday after Glen Cove schools were told to lockdown following a Nassau County police incident. According to Glen Cove Police, Nassau County Police attempted to stop a car at North Shore Middle School when the driver of the car ran out of the car and into the school. The driver then ran into the wooded area behind the school, police said. During this incident, the middle school went into lockdown, and other area schools followed suit, police said. Glen Cove school officials said the district received a call from Homeland Security that a person who was being pursued by Nassau County police had abandoned their car in the middle school parking lot. The district originally told principals to lock down the schools, but then received a followup call from Homeland Security saying they had mistaken the location of the incident and that there was no threat to Glen Cove schools. No Glen Cove schools went into full lockdown. According to Superintendent of Schools Maria Rianna, as school officials secured the buildings, they received word from police that the police activity was not in Glen Cove, but in a neighboring school district, North Shore. "We apologize if this caused any confusion, but it is our responsibility and main focus to act on information in an expedient manner in order to ensure the safety of all involved," Rianna said.
