Press release from the City of Tulsa:
April 21, 2022
May is Flood Awareness Month, and with Tulsa's recent promotion to Class 1 in the National Flood Insurance Program, residents now can take advantage of a 45 percent discount on flood insurance premiums - the lowest rates in the nation.
To find out more about flood insurance and flood awareness, Tulsans are invited to "Mitigation May," an event scheduled May 4, starting at 5:30 p.m. at WaterWorks Art Center, 1710 Charles Page Blvd.
"Mitigation" means reducing the severity and risk of damages from a natural disaster. From 5:30 to 6 p.m. at the Mitigation May event, Tulsans are welcome to visit booths and displays hosted by partners in Tulsa's Program for Public Information, with a mission to help citizens learn about flood insurance and preparedness.
A program will begin at 6 p.m., with speakers including Deputy Mayor Cassia Carr; Oklahoma State Insurance Commissioner Glen Mulready; Nicole McGavock, Senior Hydrologist at the National Weather Service; Bill Smiley, Chief of Emergency Management and Homeland Security at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and Joe Kralicek, Executive Director of the Tulsa Area Emergency Management Agency.
Flood insurance is an excellent way for Tulsans to protect their property in case of a flood. Tulsa is one of only two U.S. cities ranked Class 1 in the National Flood Insurance Program.
