Press release from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools: 4/21/2022 Sylvia Barber-Hampton is the Northwest Learning Community Teacher Assistant of the Year. The Charlotte native is an instructional assistant in the Exceptional Children's self-contained Pre-K classroom at Barnette Elementary. Hampton has worked in CMS since 1995, beginning with the Afterschool Enrichment program. Trying to make a positive difference in children's lives is what drove her to becoming a teacher assistant. "What I love most about being a teacher assistant is that I get to assist in caring for children", says Hampton. "Making a difference in their learning and contributing to their success in life." As an instructional assistant, Hampton collaborates with the lead teacher and the various support staff to ensure student's academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs are being met. Principal Melissa Roy says Hampton is a tremendous asset to her classroom, the Pre-K program and the overall school community. "She is instrumental in the preparation of small group activities and materials for her students and ensures that anecdotal notes are taken throughout all classroom activities." The 26-year CMS veteran says her inspiration is knowing that she's had students that are now in college. "It's amazing to realize that they are teachable students who can achieve greatness." Hampton is thankful for being honored as her learning community's teacher assistant of the year. "The recognition means a lot to me", says Hampton. "It means that my colleagues are aware of, and pay attention to the hard work and dedication I put in for these students." This press release was produced by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
