TUCSON, AZ —A 51-year-old female pedestrian died after suffering injuries in a collision with a vehicle Sunday in Tucson, and Police officers suspect the driver of the vehicle was impaired at the time of the incident, according to the Tucson Police Department.
Sierra Deborah Waters died at St. Joseph's Hospital after being transported there Sunday night with life-threatening injuries.
According to police reports, at 8:15 p.m. Sunday, Waters was attempting to cross the street in the 7100 block of E. Tanque Verde Road, when she was struck by a 2002 Toyota Prius.
Officers from the TPD's Operations Division East and the Tucson Fire Department were called to the scene.
The driver of the vehicle immediately stopped and cooperated in the investigation, police said. An officer at the scene from the TPD's DUI Unit determined the driver of the Toyota was impaired at the time of the collision, according to police.
As officers investigated the collision, they were notified that the pedestrian had passed away from her injuries.
According to the TPD, the investigation remains ongoing, and no citations or charges had been filed as of Tuesday morning. However, a case will be presented to the Pima County Attorney's Office once the investigation is complete.
"Midblock crossing by Ms. Waters and impaired driving are major contributing factors in the collision," a TPD spokesperson said in a statement.
