Description

Press release from the University of Alaska Anchorage: April 25, 2022 Join people across the globe and wear denim on April 27 as a symbol against sexual violence. The Denim Day campaign began in Italy after a rape conviction was overruled by the Italian Supreme Court which noted that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped remove them, thereby implying consent. The Denim Day campaign seeks to bring awareness to victim blaming and destructive myths that surround sexual violence. Learn more about the day of event and campagin on the Denim Day website. Why is consent important? Consent in the context of sexual activity means all individuals involved are agreeing to the activity, and understand what they're agreeing to. It is clear and voluntary, and helps everyone to feel safe. It is important to note that someone who is incapacitated is unable to give consent, and sex without consent is sexual assault. The clearest way to assure consent is to ask—and respect the answer given; keep checking in to ensure that continued activity is okay.
