TUSCALOOSA, AL — Central High School senior Chyna Foster says those in the flag football program at Florida Memorial University refer to her as the "Bama Beast," due to her ability to run and catch the ball. It's a fitting nickname given Foster's athleticism, which was good enough to get the attention of the program and earn her a scholarship to continue playing the burgeoning sport in college. When she signed her scholarship offer from the HBCU in Miami this week, she also became the first student-athlete in Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) history to do so to play flag football, which only recently became a state-sanctioned sport in 2021. Led by head coach Jonathan Alvarez, the Lions will hope that Foster's talents will help to improve from a 1-10 campaign in 2022. It was film submitted by Foster to the program that ultimately caught their eye and led to the offer. "It's just a blessing," Foster said on the day she signed. "It's amazing. I have no words. It's something I've always wished for, to become a student athlete ... Having something that's new to the world and being able to take it to the next level is a complete blessing." Foster said she chose Florida Memorial University because of its location, the campus environment and the family-oriented culture of the program. She also said she plans to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice and put her studies above all else. "I feel like [academics are] important because, what if I get injured?" she said. "It's something to fall back on." Have a news tip or suggestion on how I can improve Tuscaloosa Patch?
