WORCESTER, MA — The family of a 5-year-old girl who was gravely injured by an SUV driver this month has set up a fundraiser to pay for the family's medical expenses. The girl, Candice Asare-Yeboah, was crossing Stafford Street on April 18 with her mother, Asha Nyarki Asare, after visiting a salon on a shopping trip. The driver apparently didn't see the pair as they were crossing toward a Shaw's supermarket, father Simon Yeboah has said. Worcester police did not immediately announce any charges against the driver. Odomay Sika Maame, Candice's aunt, set up a GoFundMe fundraiser seeking $5,000 to pay for medical bills and other expenses. Maame said the 5-year-old is still on life support, and Asha Nyarki Asare suffered a severe leg injury and psychological trauma. Asha Nyarki Asare's injuries have also prevented her from working, dealing the family a major financial setback, Maame said. "This is a nightmare for every mother, except my sister Asha has it double. Not only is she dealing with her own injuries, but she also has the burden of not knowing what the future holds for her daughter on her shoulders," Odomay Sika Maame wrote in the appeal.
