GARDEN CITY, NY — The abandoned Sears building on Franklin Avenue in Garden City may soon no longer be vacant. The Village of Garden City has received a proposal from NYU Langone Health to turn the former department store at 1111 Franklin Ave. into a medical center. NYU would renovate the four-story building. Under the proposal, the center would offer many different types of medicine. The plan includes cardiology, in-vitro fertilization, women's health and imagine, pediatric care, radiology and internal medicine primary care services. If approved, the project would also replace a large section of the exterior concrete wall with glass, repair and upgrade the on-site parking structure and make landscape improvements. The project would not alter the grounds or access to the site, the village said. It is expected the building would be leased for 35 years. NYU Langone Health was unable to say when construction would start or how many jobs would be created at the new facility. A spokesperson for the hospital said the new facility was "part of its continued growth strategy to enhance access to integrated care on Long Island."
