Peabody Awarded $210K Safe Streets & Spaces Grant For Bike Paths

PEABODY, MA — Peabody received the largest of the grants awarded in the final round of this year's Safe Street & Spaces Program as the recipient of $210,571.00 it was announced on Tuesday. Peabody will use its part of the $1.18 million in grants awarded to create a safe and bicycle-friendly connection between surrounding neighborhoods and Peabody High School. Gov. Charlie Baker, Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito and state Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollock made the announcementin a trip to Salem to announce the grants. "Many communities have demonstrated their creativity to create safe spaces for outdoor dining, safe connections to businesses and workplaces, and expanded space for all transit options," Gov. Baker said, "from buses to bikes through the Shared Street and Spaces program. We are pleased that these grants can provide safe and responsible improvements while helping to stimulate our businesses and help people feel more comfortable moving around safely." A total of $10.2 million were given to fund 124 projects in 103 communities in recent months. "This program has really stretched our thinking about how all of us can work together to make our streets, sidewalks and parking areas sere as many diverse purposes as possible," Pollack said, "for as many different kinds of needs as possible."
