EAST GARDEN CITY, NY — A Nassau woman was arrested Tuesday night after police say she attacked officers who came to help her after a car accident.
According to police, officers were called to Oak Street in East Garden City at 11:30 p.m. for a car crash. They found a 2002 Mercedes Benz that had hit the median barrier and was now inoperable. The driver — Charmaine Grant, 22, of Ronkonkoma Avenue, West Hempstead — was told that it would need to be towed.
Police say that as officers got information about the car, they found that neither the license plate nor registration belonged to the vehicle. The officers asked Grant to provide documents showing she owned the car, and police say she refused. The officers then placed her under arrest and put her in the back of a police car.
Police say a female officer went to sit in the back seat next to Grant. As she did, police say Grant turned and began kicking the officer multiple times. The officers took Grant from the back of the car and put her on a stretcher, police said, and she continued to kick and spit at the officers as they secured her to it.
Grant was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The female officer was also treated for chest pain.
Grant is charged with second-degree assault, driving without a license, resisting arrest and second-degree obstructing governmental administration. She was arraigned on Wednesday.
