James C. Metzger and Colonel E. David Woycik, Jr. (Ret.), United States Army, both attended Hofstra University and played for the school’s men’s lacrosse program during the 1970s. Now, they are bestowing support for Long Island nonprofits and the school during a critical time as many organizations address fundraising, operation and volunteer concerns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Metzger and his Whitmore Agency are sharing a total of six figures in financial support among five organizations in honor of Woycik, a senior trial partner concentrating on personal injury, construction, highway design and toxic torts at Sanders, Sanders Block, Woycik, Viener & Grossman, P.C., of Mineola. “This is a difficult time for all of us,” said Metzger, “for our seniors, our children, our businesses, and ourselves and our careers. Nonprofits support our communities in many ways that include providing our children with guidance, giving a helping hand to veterans and others in need, and supporting students to advance their education. The current health care crisis also has affected the operations of our local charities and educational institutions, curtailing some of the vital services on which so many depend.” The support for these five organizations also champions Woycik’s tireless charitable work on Long Island. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island. The headquarters building at 25 Carle Road in Westbury is named in honor of Woycik for his commitment and volunteer efforts. America’s Vet Dogs programs in Smithtown provide enhanced mobility and renewed independence to veterans, active-duty service members and first responders with disabilities, allowing them to live with pride and self-reliance. A room at Vet Dogs was dedicated in honor of Woycik's father, Maj. Edward D. Woycik, a World War II P-47 Fighter Pilot. Canine Companions for Independence enhances the lives of people with disabilities, including veterans, by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. The organization is located at 286 Middle Island Road in Medford. Hofstra University Athletics features 21 intercollegiate sports for men and women. Woycik instituted the Colonel E. David Woycik, Jr. Pride Leadership Academy to promote success by instilling his motto (H-Honesty, I- Integrity, L-Loyalty, L- Leadership and S-Service -- the HILLS FACTOR) to selected student athletes. Hofstra University Maurice A. Deane School of Law prepares, challenges and inspires students to advance important ideas through the legal academy, the profession and society.
