Description

By Annie Dunleavy It has become impossible for us, as a nation, to practice the simple act of kindness. Collectively, we have little sympathy, certainly not enough empathy, and seemingly not a care in the world about what happens to our brothers and sisters. We have been desensitized to and given false information about the tragedies that destroy entire lives, families, and communities, day in and day out across the United States of America – the self-proclaimed, "best country in the world." While many of us will never know the pain of these experiences, are we unable to open our hearts, and imagine the devastation that would tear through our own bodies, our own lives, our own families, and our own communities, if this happened to us? Are we not willing to search every possible avenue to help those who need it most? Are we not moved to hold people responsible for their role in the perpetuation of this deeply systemic oppression of minorities? Out of pure desperation, to improve the lives of all Americans, I am asking that we imagine walking in each other's shoes – cliche, I know, but I mean it. Let's slow down the judgment, the defensiveness, and the ignorance, and simply TRY to understand. Again, out of pure desperation to improve the lives of all Americans, I am asking that we take advantage of our right to vote. We need to take this very seriously, and truly consider what we want the next four years of our lives to look like. Start today by registering to vote, checking your registration status and polling place (if you've moved or have had a name change you may need to update your registration!) and make a voting plan: decide today if you'll vote in-person, by mail with an absentee ballot or by dropping your ballot in one of the town drop boxes. Your vote is your voice.
