NEW YORK CITY — Former President Trump must shell out $10,000 a day after a judge found him in contempt of court amid a legal fight with New York's attorney general.
Trump failed to adequately respond to a subpoena from Attorney General Letitia James as part of a civil probe into his business dealings, Judge Arthur Engoron found.
"Mr. Trump, I know you take your business seriously and I take mine seriously," Engoron said at a Monday hearing, according to a CNN report. "I hereby hold you in civil contempt and fine you $10,000 per day until you purge that contempt."
The contempt order is designed to force Trump to comply with James' investigation.
Trump, a Republican, has raged over James' probe and called it a Democratic "witch hunt."
James, for her part, has pressed forward with what she called a "lawful" investigation into potentially shady business dealings and practices by Trump and his company. She requested the court hold Trump in contempt after he missed a March 31 court-imposed deadline to turn over documents.
"Today, justice prevailed," she said in a statement. "For years, Donald Trump has tried to evade the law and stop our lawful investigation into him and his company's financial dealings. Today's ruling makes clear: No one is above the law."
Trump spokespeople did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Associated Press.
