Armed, Barricaded Brockton Man Facing Charges After Haverhill Shooting

HAVERHILL, MA — A Brockton man who was arrested after barricading himself against police officers is due in Haverhill District Court Monday, facing several charges related to a shooting on Dover Street over the weekend. Jake Houston, 37, of Brockton, is facing multiple firearm charges, charges of armed assault to murder, and charges of aggravated assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Police responded to the scene in front of a home on 25 Dover Street just after 7 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of shots fired. A 38-year-old man was found and treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound at a local hospital, police said. Haverhill police were helped by members of Massachusetts State Police's Special Tactical Operations Team, which is specially trained in high-risk building entries and arrests, along with a Bomb Squad and Drone Unit. With their help, officers say they found Houston hiding in a ventilation shaft in the basement of the house next door. Police say Houston surrendered and was taken into custody after officers found him, officers also say they found the gun they believed Houston used in a pantry in the house. Bomb Squad members staged three of the unit's robots to enter the home to clear additional rooms in case they found it necessary. Houston is expected to be arraigned Monday in Haverhill District Court. No additional information was immediately available.
