FALLS CHURCH, VA — For residents of the City of Falls Church who believe their property was not assessed properly this year, they have until Friday to submit an appeal of their real estate assessment.
Appeals can be made based on the fair market value of the property, lack of uniformity, or errors in property description, the city said.
Residents should consider whether their property could have been sold for the assessed value on Jan. 1, 2022. If they believe the property could not have been sold for an amount "reasonably equal" to the assessment, they should consider filing an appeal.
"Simply saying your home has increased in value too much in a single year isn't a legal basis," the city said.
Residents should contact the city's Real Estate Assessment Office before filing an appeal of their property assessment. The office can be reached by email at [email protected], or by phone at 703-248-5022.
The City of Falls Church's proposed budget for fiscal year 2023 calls for a reduction in the real estate tax rate in response to rising property assessments in the city. Under the budget proposal, unveiled on March 28, the real estate tax rate for the new fiscal year would drop by 8.5 cents to $1.235 per $100 of assessed value, down from $1.320 per $100 of assessed value.
The Falls Church City Council is scheduled to adopt its final budget for fiscal year 2023 on May 2.
