MATTAPAN, MA — A large fire in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood sent four to the hospital and displaced 17 Sunday morning, members of the Boston Fire Department said.
Emergency crews responded to the burning building at 115 Deering Road, around 10:45 a.m. Sunday, where heavy fire was reported on the rear porches and attic. Firefighters worked to contain the fire to the home and prevent it from spreading to surrounding buildings.
Photos and videos shared by the department on Twitter showed heavy flames burning through the third-floor rear porches and the rear of the attic.
Two adults and two children were taken to the hospital by Boston EMS for minor smoke inhalation and their current condition has not yet been released.
Detail companies remained on the scene after the fire was knocked out around 11 a.m. to make sure there were no remaining hot spots.
"All companies are ordered off the 3rd floor rear porches as the fire has burned thru," Boston Fire tweeted during the fire. "Companies did a great job with the amount of fire in the rear, to stop the fire from spreading to the adjacent buildings."
The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is assisting seven adults and 10 children who were displaced by the fire.
Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
No additional information was immediately available.
