Press release from the Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront: April 22, 2022 It's the Golden Jubilee of Community Gardening in and around Burlington. Throughout this growing season we will celebrate the story of how a community grew gardens, and how gardens, in return, grew a community. Begin by learning all about the rich history of community gardening in our area in this blog by former community gardener Jim Flint.We're kicking it off with two spring workshops with more events and celebrations to come, so stay tuned. Workshops: Register for the first two session of the season-long workshop series "Garden Like A Farmer" Integrated Pest Management Workshop Thursday May 5th, 5pm – 6:30pmCo-Op Victory Garden at Tommy ThompsonRegistration Link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/508054EADA922A3FE3-integrated Delayed planting, selecting disease-resistant varieties, and using lure traps are simple and effective strategies that many gardeners would benefit from. Knowing which insect netting or row cover to use, how and when to cover your crops, are all important considerations to learn about. Join us in this exploration of pest management in gardener-friendly language and using techniques and tools accessible to small scale growers. Flea beetles, leaf miner, Colorado potato beetle, cucumber beetle, and leak moth are some of the pests we will focus on. Composting Workshop Thursday, May 19th, 5pm – 6:30pmIntervale CenterRegistration Link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/508054EADA922A3FE3-composting In this workshop Nathan Lake will cover the basics behind the science, technique, upkeep, and overall process of backyard composting. We will discuss strategies for composting in a small urban environment, or with access to more space. Once you have a working compost strategy, eliminating food waste and feeding your garden becomes easy! Early Season Planting Saturday, May 21st, 10am – 11:30amTommy Thompson Community GardenRegistration Link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4cacab2ca2f94-early Ron Krupp & Fred Schmidt will focus on preparing your garden soil for planting plus the Spring planting of peas, early beets for greens, lettuce, chard, kale, and other greens. Learn how to plant cucumber and zucchini seeds under floating row covers. Learn about cold frames and organic controls for flea beetles with brassica's. Plus how to start a compost pile in no-till and home gardens. Upcoming Events: Spring Fling Sunday, May 22nd, 1pm – 4pmPurchase tickets here, $20 each:Contois Auditorium Come out to enjoy music and dancing and support a fund-raiser for the Burlington Community Gardens 50th Anniversary celebration and scholarship fund. This Spring Fling will include music by Jenni & the Jazz Junketeers, basic swing dance lessons, a silent auction and snacks. It will be a festive Sunday afternoon for all! Plant & Seed Swap Tuesday, May 24th, 4pm – 7pm311 North Avenue Stop by Kieslich Park to share your plant starts and/or seeds with other community members! This event will be part of the season long celebration of 50 Years of Community Gardening in Burlington. There will be music, snacks and plenty of plants and seeds to go around!
