CAYCE, SC — A South Carolina police officer and a suspect were both killed in a domestic disturbance call that resulted in a shooting early Sunday in Cayce. Cayce police officer Roy Andrew "Drew" Barr, 28, was the officer who was shot and killed, Cayce Police Chief Chris Cowan said at a news conference Sunday. While investigating the domestic disturbance call around 2:48 a.m. Sunday morning, Barr encountered a man in the front yard of the house located at 118 Rossmore Drive in Cayce. When Barr began speaking with the man, gunshots came from inside the house, with one of them striking and killing Barr, police said. The suspect barricaded himself inside the house, and after seven hours of negotiations with the Columbia Police Department negotiations team, he killed himself, according to authorities. Police have not released the name of the deceased suspect. Cowan called Barr a dedicated officer who was "married to his profession." Barr, who had previously been an EMT and a firefighter, had been with the Cayce Police Department for six years. "He cared about nothing else other than serving his community," Cowan said. "He was shot and killed this morning for no reason. There was no call for it. There was no reason for it. It was inexcusable."
