PHILADELPHIA — Three children and an adult died in a house fire early Sunday morning in Philadelphia, according to officials. Firefighters were called to a home on the 3000 block of Hartville Street at about 2:01 a.m. Sunday and arrived in 2 minutes. When crews arrived, they found heavy fire in the home's first and second floors, Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel said. Firefighters were able to get into the home and start knocking the fire back. In the home, firefighters found one of the children, but Thiel said "it was too late." After about 35 minutes, the fire was under control and responders found two other children and their father dead in the home. One child was a kindergartener and another a third-grader at Lewis Elkin Elementary School, NBC10 reports. A woman, presumed to be the children's mother, was able to escape the home and was taken to a hospital for treatment. There is no word on what caused the fire, but Thiel said the home did not have working smoke alarms in the home.
