Press release from San Diego Community College District: April 22, 2022 The San Diego Community College District Office and all campuses will be closed on Monday, June 20, 2021 in observance of the federal holiday Juneteenth. The district will resume regular business hours at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21. Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth was established as the 12th federal holiday on June 17, 2021 with the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. "This is a day of profound weight and profound power, a day in which we remember the moral strain, the terrible toll that slavery took on the country and continues to take," said President Joe Biden.
