The Monrovia City Council is proud to proclaim April 22 as Earth Day and April 29 as Arbor Day. We often take for granted the world around us. The clean air, beautiful trees and safe drinking water. On the 52nd anniversary of this Earth Day, be sure to think about investing in our planet and be conscious of the actions you take and their long term effects. Mark your calendar for the following events and workshops in honor of Arbor Day and Earth Day! Earth Day Celebration - The Monrovia Canyon Park team invites you to Celebrate Earth Day on Friday, April 22, at 4 p.m., at Monrovia Library Park! There will be fun activities for all ages, including arts & crafts, information booths, a scavenger hunt and giveaways. Celebrating Earth Day & Arbor Day - April 23 - Presented by Grow Monrovia, this event will again take place on the Maryknoll Sisters Property and is called Ask an Arborist, where residents can ask an experienced arborist questions about their mature trees and attend a workshop on proper planting techniques for new trees. New shade trees will be given to residents for front yards and fruit trees given out for community spaces like churches. Arbor Day Tree Planting - On Friday, April 29, at 4 p.m., the Monrovia Youth Commission and the Teen Advisory Board will plant an Engelman Oak Tree at Recreation Park! Those interested in attending can send an RSVP to Tiffany Peterson [email protected]. Countertop Compost Bin Giveaway When you think of a global climate crisis, what do you think of? Do you think, "Maybe I should drive less or turn off the lights in my home?" Those could be good ideas, but did you know that reducing your waste can also make a major impact on global greenhouse gas emissions? According the CalRecycle, waste in landfills produces 20% of the state's methane, a pollutant 84 times more potent that carbon dioxide. It makes you think, what did I throw away today? Coffee cup, stirrers, Ziploc bag, plastic utensils, napkins, paper, plastic bags…. The list goes on, and that's not even the tip of the iceberg. But it doesn't have to be this way. One of the biggest misconceptions of helping reduce waste is that you have to do it perfectly or not at all. Let's ditch that thinking! Whether it be ditching the plastic bag for a reusable tote, a one-time use Ziploc for a reusable container, a plastic waste bottle for a reusable water bottle, or ditching the black bin for the compost bin! It starts now and it starts with you, Monrovia! The City of Monrovia wants to kick start our initiative to zero waste and it'll just take two simple steps! Take a photo of yourself or your family taking part in an activity that promotes zero waste. That could be recycling, composting, ditching plastic for something reusable etc., BE CREATIVE! Once you post, use the #CleanMonrovia, on Instagram, by May 4, to be entered into a raffle to win prizes! Winners will be notified by Thursday, May 5. Metro FREE & Discounted Rides Metro will be offering free bus, rail and bike share rides on Earth Day — Friday, April 22 — in recognition of public transit's role in helping improve the environment.
