EDINA, MN — Edina crews are expected to spend several weeks flushing the city's hydrants for the start of spring, a project that could cause some residents to see rust-colored water coming from their faucets.
The rust-colored water is safe to drink but could stain clothes, officials said, urging residents to check for signs of discoloration before doing laundry.

Residents whose clothes are stained by the water should call Public Works at 952-826-0375 before trying to dry them. Public Works employees will provide residents with a free iron-removing product, according to the city.
Residents who see discolored water when they turn on their faucets should run the water until it is clear.

Edina's spring hydrant-flushing is meant to clean water mains and minimize the amount of minerals in the city's water, like iron and manganese, officials said. The annual project also helps workers determine which hydrants need maintenance.
Crews started flushing hydrants Monday and could need about three weeks to flush all of the city's hydrants, officials said.
