Description
CARLSBAD, CA — The city of Carlsbad is seeking community input on public art that will be featured on Fire Station 2.
The art will be on the west- and south-facing sides of the station, which is currently being rebuilt. It will be visible from El Camino Real at the corner of Arenal Road in south Carlsbad.
Artist Carter Taub designed the piece, which would be integrated into the building's architecture.
"Abstract shapes inspired by nature's flowing, sweeping lines are fused onto glass panes to contrast with the building's strong geometry," a media release from the city said. "Conceptually, the artwork is a 'map mashup' of aerial views of Carlsbad including color inspiration from famous Southern California sunsets over the Pacific, the vibrant Flower Fields, Batiquitos Lagoon and colorful Victorians in Olde Carlsbad."
Community members can meet the artist and members of the city's Cultural Arts Office, see poster boards of the proposed art, and provide feedback during two events on Saturday. The events are slated from 10-11:30 a.m. at Carlsbad City Library at 1775 Dove Lane and from 2-4 p.m. at Batiquitos Lagoon Nature Center at 7380 Gabbiano Lane.
Residents can also view the artwork online and take a survey by May 4.
Following the public input process, the artist will consider and incorporate feedback prior to presenting the artwork to the Arts Commission in May. If approved, the proposed designs will then be shared with the City Council in June for final approval.
