DEARBORN, MI — A Grand Rapids-area man was arrested after police said he solicited sexually explicit material from a Dearborn teen online, Dearborn Police said. The 14-year-old minor self-identified as autistic.
Mason Kuiper, from Zeeland, was charged with five counts of aggravated possession of child sex abuse material and five counts of using the internet to commit a crime.
He was placed before Judge Mark Somers in the 19th District Court and given a $200,000 cash bond. A probable cause conference was scheduled for May 6 at 9 a.m.
Police said they found the sexually explicit material on April 10 after seizing Kuiper's devices during a search warrant at his home in Zeeland, roughly three hours from Dearborn. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office assisted Dearborn Police in arresting Kuiper.
"Parents must remain vigilant when it comes to monitoring their children's social media usage," Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said. "We will use all available resources to ensure those that prey on innocent children are brought to justice, no matter the distance."
