TRUMBULL, CT — Police said a robbery suspect surrendered early Saturday after he fled the Trumbull mall and crashed a vehicle, police said. A lone man entered the Zales jewelry store around 7 p.m. and brandished a handgun, Assistant Chief Glenn Byrnes said in a statement. The gun fired when the man used it to smash a glass display. No one was injured during the incident. The man grabbed several gold chains and fled the area, Byrnes said. Officers spotted a vehicle fleeing the mall onto Main Street and pursued it until the driver lost control near the intersection of Madison Avenue and Anton Street in Bridgeport. Police believe the robbery suspect still had the gun used in the robbery. Bridgeport police have taken control of the crash scene and continue to encourage the suspect to surrender peacefully as of 10 p.m., Byrnes said. The suspect surrendered at 12:11 a.m. Saturday, police said. Some stores near Zales closed for the evening, but the rest of the mall remained open until its regular closing time at 9 p.m. In a separate incident, there was a fatal accident in the Canoe Brook Road area in Trumbull, police said. Police are still on scene and investigating.
