TRUMBULL, CT — A Bridgeport man was arrested after he assaulted an off-duty Trumbull police officer Wednesday night, according to police. Sgt. James Arlio was on Main Street when he saw a car operated by Damien Sanchez, 41, cross the center line and crash head-on into an oncoming vehicle, police spokesman Lt. Brian Weir said. Arlio went to check on both crash victims and saw Sanchez try to start his car and leave the scene, Weir said. Arlio told Sanchez not to leave. Sanchez then pushed Arlio down to the ground when he was checking on the other crash victim, according to Weir. Sanchez then ran off. Arlio sustained minor injuries. Trumbull, Monroe and state police searched for Sanchez. He eventually went to Trumbull police headquarters and was arrested. He was charged with assault on a police officer, assault on a person over 60 years old, interfering with police and possession of less than one half an ounce of marijuana. Sanchez was also charged with evading responsibility and failure to drive right. He was held in lieu of $25,500 bail.
