Description

Named after legendary fiddle player Byron Berline's first album, these former bandmates pay homage to his influence in their musical lives One Eyed Jack With the passing of Byron in July 2021, members of the Byron Berline Band, through much grief and sadness, pressed on and fulfilled the band’s obligations through the end of 2021. After much thought and consideration, a new band emerged. This new band would not only explore new musical paths but pay homage to our former band leader. The name One-Eyed Jack was chosen as a nod to the first Byron Berline Band album of the same name. From Bill Monroe and Bob Wills to The Beatles and the Rolling Stones and Gram Parsons to Muddy Waters, One-Eyed Jack delivers Americana Music at its finest. Billy Perry/Banjo: Regarded as Oklahoma’s master of the banjo, Billy Perry has been instrumental in Oklahoma’s music scene since the age 13 when he was performing at Springlake Amusement Park in OKC. Subsequent bands are the Bluegrass Revue with his brother Mike, Billy and Bobby Clark, and Vince Gill, Mountain Smoke, Crossfire, and The Renegades, often fronting for national and internationally renowned groups. In addition to his banjo, Billy can often be seen playing his dobro and singing lead vocals. Greg Burgess/Fiddle/Guitar: Greg Burgess has been playing guitar and fiddle for over 40 years. Starting as a child, Greg had a lot of support and instruction from family and friends. Over the years, associations with fiddlers like Clark Forshee, Amos Hedrick, Ace Sewell, Russell O'Neal, Herman Johnson, Dick Barrett, Orville Burns, Merle David and, of course, Byron Berline, helped form Greg's fiddling style. Greg has won the Oklahoma State Fiddle Championship several times and has been ranked in the top 10 at many national level fiddle contests. Greg has recorded and/or shared the stage with several musical greats including Hank Thompson, Leon Raush, Jody Miller, Mel Tillis, Moe Bandy, Billy Walker, Wanda Jackson, Becky Hobbs, Red Stegall, Suzy Bogguss, Asleep at the Wheel, Wade Hayes and more. Greg also has been included in the Folk Life section of the Oklahoma History Center and was recently inducted into the Western Swing Hall Fame. Jim Fish/Guitar: Jim Fish began his career as a musician playing washboard in a jug band in the early 1960s, but the lure of the guitar was too powerful to deny. Fish saw The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show and began a decades-long interest in guitar as a result. Jim lists diverse influences including Don Rich, George Harrison, Roger McGuinn and Clarence White. Jim toured the U.S. with the internationally known southern rock band, The Henry Paul Band, releasing two albums on Atlantic Records in the late 1970s. The band's first gig was opening for the Rolling Stones in Lakeland, Florida. Jim's interest in Clarence White's singular guitar playing guided him toward bluegrass music. Fish uses a custom-made "vintaged" Triggs acoustic guitar, and a Telecaster with a string-bender device which contributed to the sound of the Byron Berline Band. Richard Sharp/Bass: Richard Sharp feels at home on the left-handed upright bass. He grew up listening to all kinds of music from Hank Williams to Bill Monroe and The Beatles, and has toured and recorded with Harlow Wilcox, including his Grammy nominated album "Groovy Grubworm." Sharp has shared the stage with Hank Thompson, the Texas Playboys, Chris Hillman, Vince Gill, Alan Munde, John Anderson, Boxcar Willie, Wanda Jackson, Colin Raye and Les Gilliam. Richard was recently inducted into the Western Swing Hall of Fame. Sharp's showmanship and vocal contributions bring a nice variety to the band. Steve Short/Drums: Steve Short started playing drums at an early age with his parents' family band. Since then, Steve has recorded and played with every big name imaginable, including three years touring with Reba Mclntyre. Steve is a highly successful recording and sound engineer who has engineered several of the Byron Berline Band albums, including the One-Eyed Jack album. Steve undoubtedly is the most popular session drummer in the Oklahoma area. Henry Byron Burgess/Mandolin: Henry Byron Burgess, named after Byron Berline, is a 15-year-old Oklahoma native. He has developed a love and passion for all styles of music including bluegrass and western swing. The son of Greg Burgess, music has always been a significant part of Henry’s life. He began playing fiddle at age 10. At age 11 he witnessed Byron Berline recover his beloved Gibson Loar Mandolin from a safe that survived the fire that destroyed Byron’s Doublestop Fiddle Shop and Music Hall. This event was instrumental in Henry turning his focus to playing mandolin. Henry’s musical ability has been encouraged and influenced by his father, Byron Berline and the members of his band and other musicians in the Oklahoma music scene. Henry had the great privilege of learning at the knee of Byron Berline. Tables to be sold all or in part to one party.
