Description

Celebrate Mother's Day this year by sharing stories of black hair with author and photographer St. Clair Detrick-Jules! Join us for an evening of sharing stories, light refreshments, and a unique, complimentary photoshoot for mothers and daughters in the picturesque Apollo Conservatory on the rooftop of the bookstore! St. Clair Detrick Jules is an accomplished portrait photographer and debut author. Her book My Beautiful Black Hair features a collection of empowering stories and captivating photos. My Beautiful Black Hair celebrates an aspect of Black femininity—natural hair—and embraces it as a central part of Black womanhood. Inside you will meet one hundred and one Black women who share their stories of learning to love their natural hair and the immense power in that self-love. The book is an encouraging voice for young Black women and the adults who remember their own journeys to self-acceptance. St. Clair Detrick-Jules was inspired to write the book when her little sister, Khloe, came home from preschool where a classmate had told her that her hair was ugly. St. Clair wanted to send a message to Khloe and young Black women everywhere that their hair is beautiful just the way it is! Your ticket includes a copy of the book, cocktail hour, and a unique one-of-a-kind photo session with you and your Mother(s)/Daughter(s). The event itself will open with a discussion about the book, including audience participation sharing stories of hair journeys, and then open for a casual cocktail hour during which ticket holders will have the opportunity to have their photo taken with their Mother(s)/Daughter(s) in the beautiful Apollo conservatory space, taken by St. Clair herself!
