Come walk along the Shingle Creek boardwalk, and learn about native plants and how to use i-Naturalist to identify plants. The Shingle Creek Regional Trail (SCRT) is a multi-use recreational trail being developed through cooperation between the local governments of the City of Kissimmee, Osceola County, the City of Orlando, and Orange County. Various tracts along the Osceola County portion were purchased with taxpayer funds from the SAVE Osceola Program, a citizen initiative approved in 2004. When fully constructed, it will span 32 miles through one of Florida’s most traveled urbanized areas, from Wekiva Springs State Park in Seminole County to the Kissimmee Lakefront Park. This field trip will begin on the front porch at the Welcome Center, where visitors can return to learn about Osceola County history and natural resources. We will walk under Highway 192 along the creek and cross the creek on the boardwalk and bridge that parallels the old Midland Railroad track. We will wander through pine flatwoods, an oak hammock and into the edge of the Shingle Creek swamp, the headwaters to the Everglades ecosystem. Rainwater that falls in this watershed eventually flows into Lake Tohopekaliga and connects through a chain of lakes and the Kissimmee River to Lake Okeechobee and eventually the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean. Pack a light lunch or snacks and join us for a picnic overlooking Shingle Creek.
