BOSTON — With most of the focus on the College Football Playoffs, it might be easy to forget that Boston College is playing Jan. 2 in something called the TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl. BC got the bowl invitation despite a 6-6 record in the 2019 season and the firing Dec. 1 of head coach Steve Addazio, whose record after seven seasons stood at 44-44. Addazio was replaced by Jeff Hafley, who had been Defensive Coordinator of the Year for 2019 at Ohio State, but Rich Gunnell will coach the bowl game. Oddsmakers have the Eagles as a one-touchdown underdog to the Cincinnati Bearcats. The two teams have played seven times since 1961, with BC winning four. The bowl season kicked off Dec. 20, and games will continue into the second week of January, with the College Football Playoff National Championship set for Jan. 13 in New Orleans.
