No New Coronavirus-Related Deaths In Newton This Week

NEWTON MA —For the first time since April, the city has gone a week without any new reported deaths related to the coronavirus. "But this news does not mean we can let up," said Mayor Ruthanne Fuller in a statement. The mayor went on to implore residents to continue to wear face coverings, stay 6 feet away from people not in your household, wash hands frequently and stay home when not feeling well in an effort to help mitigate the continued spread of the virus. As of June 16, some 765 residents have tested positive for the virus, about 42 percent of those were people residing in congregant living-facilities such as nursing, or assisted living facilities. During the pandemic 118 people in Newton have died because of complications to the illness the virus causes, COVID-19. The rate of infection in Newton this week was 833.99 per 100,000 people. By comparison: In neighboring Brookline, where 379 people have tested positive the rate was 588.65. In Waltham, where 1,218 people tested positive, the rate was 1827.20 as of Wednesday. In Needham, where 328 people had tested positive, the rate was 1118.99. Officials are urging anyone who marched in a protest to be tested at one of 50 testing cites available for free Thursday.
