MBTA Green Line To Close For 18 Days: What To Know

NEWTON, MA — The Green Line's D train will be closed for about 18 days in June as the MBTA takes advantage the low ridership amid pandemic to speed up repairs on the line. The MBTA is closing the line between Riverside and Kenmore stations for a nine-day work period two times this month. The first will begin June 9 and end June 14. There will be a bit of a reprieve and the second stint will begin June 20 and go through June 28. The MBTA will be providing free shuttle service in the T's absence. The repair work during that time will mean noisier work-at-home days for those who are staying at home to work in the neighborhoods adjacent. But, it comes with the promise of expedited repairs. The closures are expected to trim timeline of the project by 162 days, meaning by the end of June, the project to repair signal and track will be 72 percent complete, according to officials. During the 18 days of work more than 21,462 feet of rail, turnouts, switches and signal equipment will be replaced. The aim of the project is to help improve service along the Green Line. The upgrades are designed to make service through Newton more reliable, faster, safer, and, when there are failures, response times faster. Free shuttles will run from Riverside to Kenmore, stopping at Newton's Green Line stations, from Saturday, June 9 through Sunday June 14, and then from Saturday, June 20 through Sunday, June 28.
