Farmingdale Village: Infrastructure Improvements Underway

FARMINGDALE, NY — Infrastructure work is underway in Farmingdale Village, according to Mayor Ralph Ekstrand in his weekly update. Work has started on Main Street: new curbs, handicap ramps and crosswalks in the access driveways leading to Parking Lots 3 and 4 are being built. The project is being done in phases from Prospect Street North on the east side of Main Street to South Front Street, then south from South Front Street to Prospect Street on the west side. Parking and traffic lane patterns are altered during the construction, so Ekstrand urged drivers to take caution. This will be followed by the complete repaving of Main Street from Grant Street to South Front Street. The two projects are funded by agreements between Nassau County and Farmingdale Village. They will be paid for by the county without any expense to Village taxpayers, Ekstrand said. Both projects are estimated to be completed in early to mid-November. Jason Schultz, of Savik and Murray, the Village's architecture firm, said the project should take a couple of more weeks depending on the weather. "We are doing mainly curb and handicap ramp improvements," he said, according to the Village's news release. "We are also doing brick repair and tripping hazard repair as we work, whatever we find that needs to be addressed." Preliminary work is underway for the repaving of Route 109, according to the Village. St. Kilian announced a full service, handicap-friendly elevator will be installed in the coming months, the mayor wrote. For the past 20 years, the church had an access lift that only held a few people. As the lift aged, it continuously got stuck. The full-service elevator will be a three-stop elevator, going from the ground level to the basement and Sanctuary Worship area. "This is terrific news and a further enhancement to what makes all aspects of our beloved Farmingdale Village special," Ekstrand wrote. Farmingdale Village was nominated for "Best Downtown 2021" in the Bethpage Best of Long Island. The Village has won the category in five of the past six years; 2019 being the exception since 2015. Voting is open through Dec. 15, and the best downtown can be found in the shopping category. Ekstrand urged Dalers to vote Farmingdale.
