Suicidal Man Brandishes Knife, Throws Bottles In 3-Hour Standoff: PD

RIVERSIDE, NY — A suicidal man was taken into custody at a Riverside mobile home park Friday after a three-hour standoff during which he threw oil-filled bottles and brandished a long knife, police said. According to Southampton Town Police, a call came in about 7:15 a.m. about a suicidal man; patrol officers and detectives found him at 3 p.m. in the Riverwoods Mobile Home Community, located on County Road 104 in Riverside, police said. He fled into his residence and refused to come out to be evaluated, police said. The man was acting irrationally and had what was believed to be a self-inflicted laceration to his wrist, police said. He came out of the residence several times, throwing the bottles, holding a gasoline can with a rag inserted in the spout, and brandishing the large knife, police said. The standoff took place at a Riverside mobile home community Friday, police said. / Courtesy Peggy Richards Southampton Town Police crisis negotiators were called, along with the Southampton Town Police emergency services unit; a drone was also used, police said. A Polish-speaking officer was also called, as the man's native language was Polish, police said. After three hours, members of emergency services unit were able to take the man into custody, police said. He was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Southampton Town fire marshals, New York State troopers, A Suffolk County Sheriff's K=9 unit, Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Riverhead Fire Department also helped, police said.
