BETHPAGE, NY — Two Hogansburg, New York, men were arrested Wednesday night in Bethpage after police said they found them in a vehicle with drugs. One of the men attacked and injured two officers, police said.
Officers stopped a gray 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck for a defective license plate light around 10:50 p.m., police said. The officers smelled marijuana and removed Jonathan M. Burwell, 30, and Brian Jacobs, 33, from the truck, police said.
Burwell then assaulted and injured two officers, police said. A substance believed to be heroin was found in Burwell's pants pocket, police said. Jacobs had additional controlled substances, police said. More drugs were found in the truck, police said.

Burwell was charged with second-degree assault, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
Police said the arrests were part of Operation Natalie, a Nassau County police program targeting opioids.
