Join VoiceWaves for a workshop where participants will learn about how to tell stories using comics. The workshop will be led by Genesis Lugo and Valour Aguilar, the illustrators of the upcoming “How Did We Get Here? — Long Beach” comic book. Genesis Lugo (she/her) is a Mexican-American storyboard artist and indie comic book artist who lives in Orange County with her tiny yorkie. She graduated with a degree in animation from California State University of Long Beach, where she completed the short films “Carrots” and “We Are Gods" and fell in love with comic book making. She’s published the webcomic series “Bodies Out of Tune” — a story about a boy in music school who meets another boy that changes his life — on Gumroad. Genesis loves telling stories and recently sharing them with the public has brought much joy. As a Mexican American, she wants to let her voice be heard. Valor Aguilar (he/him) is a queer biracial artist in the Los Angeles area. He graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and is an active member of groups like Rise Up Animation and Queer/Trans in Animation. A recipient of the Herb Alpert Young Emerging Artist Award, he was also recently admitted to the Emile Cohl Atelier on a full ride scholarship. He has three sisters, two cats, and if he was any animal besides human, he would probably be a rat. VoiceWaves is a Long Beach youth-led journalism and media-training project. The youth, ages 15–25, are learning to report, write, and create digital journalism content. Their stories raise awareness about community health issues and activate change in local neighborhoods. If you are interested in getting trained and published with VoiceWaves, please contact editor, Carlos Omar, at [email protected]
