Description
WESTBURY, NY — Temporary layoffs that Long Island's Century 21 department stores announced in March have become permanent due to the coronavirus shutdowns, the company said in filings with the state.
In March, the company temporarily laid off more than 150 people from its two Long Island stores. This week, as businesses begin to reopen, those layoffs became permanent.
Century 21 laid off 51 employees from its store in the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, and 104 employees from its store in Westbury.
The Westbury store has reopened, but the Valley Stream location is still closed.
In filings with the state Department of Labor, the company cited "unforeseeable business circumstances prompted by COVID-19" as the reason for the layoffs.
