Description
SEATTLE — A Seattle police officer shot a rifle-wielding man who was shooting inside an apartment complex early Friday in the city's Squire Park neighborhood, police said.
Police said they were called to the apartment complex around 4:30 a.m. for reports of gunfire and people screaming. Officers entered the complex and contacted the suspect, who they said was armed with a rifle. One officer shot the suspect, who then entered an apartment unit and refused to leave, police said.
Officers eventually convinced the man to surrender and took him into custody. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center for medical treatment.
Officers checked the building and found no shooting victims, though several apartment units sustained bullet damage, police said.
Police will release video of the shooting within three days.
The building is near Bailey Gatzert Elementary School.
Transportation officials said police activity blocked all lanes on East Yesler Way from 12th Avenue South to 17th Avenue South.
"Use alternate routes," the Seattle Department of Transportation tweeted.
Video showed a man was placed into an ambulance following the shooting, KIRO-TV reported. Multiple police SUVs were at the scene, along with an armored SWAT vehicle.
