PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — FedEx Field in Landover initially was in the running as a host site for the 2026 World Cup in conjunction with Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium. But FedEx Field dropped out of the bidding recently. The stadium opened in 1997 and ranked among the older facilities that initially bid to be a host site in 2017. It hosted matches during the 1999 Women's World Cup. Washington, D.C.'s RFK Stadium was a host site during the 1994 Men's World Cup and is scheduled to be demolished. According to the Associated Press, 17 stadiums in 16 areas across the state remain the bidding for the World Cup. Three cities each in Canada and Mexico are part of the bidding. The bid plan called for 16 total sites for the tournament. While FIFA aimed for mid-May for disclosing site selections, it now intends to announce the sites by mid-June instead. Sixty games will be played in the U.S., including all from the quarterfinals on. Canada and Mexico are to host 10 games each, the AP reported.
