Good day, neighbors! Jeri Karges here with today's issue of the Sacramento Daily. First, today's weather: Sunny and pleasant. High: 78 Low: 45. Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento: President Joe Biden nominated Phillip A. Talbert as United States attorney for the Eastern District of California. He'll now need Senate confirmation. The office, which serves as the region's federal prosecutor, has more than 90 attorneys and offices in Sacramento, Fresno and Bakersfield and serves a region extending from Kern County to the Oregon state line. Talbert has deep roots and a long career in Sacramento. He has been the attorney general-appointed U.S. attorney since December. He also held the position in 2016 and 2017. The legal community on Thursday lauded Talbert's expected appointment. He received a B.A. degree in economics from Harvard University, a master of economics degree from the University of Sydney, Australia, which he attended on a Rotary Foundation Scholarship, and his law degree from the UCLA School of Law. "The sturgeon poachers intentionally target these really large egg-laying females which are the future of the population," said Patrick Foy, with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. "They take those fish, process those eggs into caviar to sell for personal profit." Officials believe the suspects caught a combined total of at least 36 sturgeon. (KCRA3)Two people died after being shot in downtown Sacramento on Thursday, police said. Officers were called to the 1100 block of T Street after an assault was reported just before 3 p.m. Police found a man and a woman who each had at least one gunshot wound.
