NATICK, MA — Coronavirus has claimed one of the most popular July 4 events around. On Monday, the Natick Friends of the 4th organizers announced that the 2020 festivities would be called off due to concerns about crowds. The organizers were also concerned about spending money on this year's event due to an economic downturn related to the pandemic. "Many factors contributed to this decision, with our paramount concern being the health and safety of the parade watchers, participants and all involved. Other considerations are the uncertain duration of the stay at home and social distancing orders and our financial obligations," the Board of Directors wrote in a statement on the group's website. The 2020 Friends of the 4th would've been the town's 65th consecutive celebration. The event typically begins with a children's parade around the town green, culminating in a long parade down Route 27. The organizers are asking local residents to donate to the Natick Service Council in honor of the event. The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, the biggest Independence Day event in the state, was still moving ahead as of May 4. But organizers are expected to make a final decision sometime in May. The Boston Pops has already canceled its spring 2020 season.
