WEST CHICAGO, IL — A 17-year-old boy faces felony charges after he was accused of bringing a handgun to a high school in West Chicago. Police say authorities received a tip that the teen brought a gun to West Chicago Community High School Thursday. He is accused of having a Ruger 9mm handgun on him while at the school. The student was taken into custody Thursday afternoon. DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement, "School Safety remains a top priority of my administration. Any threat, or even the perception of a threat, will be taken very seriously and fully investigated." Student Accused Of Drawing Threatening Image At Glenbard East West Chicago Community High School officials released an update Friday saying there had been no indication that the student approached or threatened anyone and that there was not an active threat to the school or greater community. "The district does not tolerate weapons, or the threat of weapons, in our school," Principal Will Dwyer wrote in the statement. Dwyer added, "Incidents such as this one can be alarming. However, they are also an opportunity to remind parents, students, and staff of the importance of maintaining a welcoming and secure learning environment, and the value of meaningful relationships in the school. This incident also emphasizes the importance of telling a staff member immediately if there is a weapon in school."
