MISSION VIEJO, CA — Thirty parakeets abandoned on a Laguna Niguel trail were adopted, thanks to the efforts of the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center and an outpouring of support from the community, the city said in a statement Thursday. The parakeets were discovered by a Laguna Niguel resident April 12 while he was walking his dog on a trail near Moulton Parkway, according to previous Patch reports. The parakeets were recovered by Mission Viejo Animal Services before being cleaned, assessed and rehabilitated. The parakeet rescue triggered an outpour of community support, and each abandoned bird was adopted in a matter of days, a spokesperson for the city said. "The Mission Viejo Animal Services Center is overwhelmed and extremely grateful by the public's interest and support," Animal Services Supervisor Brynn Lavison said. "In the end, 15 lucky families were able to add an adorable feathered family member or two to their homes." According to Lavison, the Mission Viejo Animal Services Center was flooded with inquiries from interested adopters. "We would like to sincerely thank the community and all of the adopters for the heartwarming show of concern over these beautiful birds," Lavison said.
