Press release from San Diego County Sheriff's Department: April 20, 2022 The San Diego County Sheriff's Department will continue to provide public safety services for its contract cities. We take pride in announcing today that all nine of our contract cities have unanimously ratified a five-year extension to continue with the Sheriff's Department as their law enforcement provider. Many of these cities have contracted for law enforcement services with the Sheriff's Department for decades. This is a testament to the confidence the cities have in the services we provide and a proven track record of safe communities. We provide high quality service resulting in lower crime rates at a lower cost allowing city leaders to spend money and resources on other quality of life issues in their city. Established in 1850, the Sheriff's Department has been providing public safety services to nine contract cities since 1959. With a staff of 4,693, we protect and serve a population of more than 960,000. Our patrol area covers 4,500 square miles including those in nine contract cities, as well as unincorporated areas of the county along the Mexican border. We have 21 stations and substations, as well as nearly a dozen support service offices in the region. Helicopter, Bomb/Arson, Crime Lab, Homicide and Special Enforcement Detail (SED/SWAT) are just some of the emergency services we provide for free to our contract cities and partner law enforcement agencies across the county. The men and women of this department understand the level of trust and responsibility you have placed in us. Our collaborative partnership with the community is key to keeping our county a vibrant and safe place to live, work and visit. We are committed to providing service in a manner that is honest, fair, responsive, efficient, inclusive and respectful to all. "Our employees are the very foundation of our organization. Their individual backgrounds, skills and experiences from all over the world reflect the diverse communities we are sworn to serve and protect. I am privileged to work with caring professionals who take pride in advancing our mission of providing quality public safety service to everyone in San Diego County." – Undersheriff Kelly Martinez "The City of Imperial Beach welcomes the proposed five-year extension of the contract with the San Diego County Sheriff to provide law enforcement services in the city. Imperial Beach is one of the safest cities in the county and the efforts of the Sheriff's Department are critical in maintaining the safe atmosphere we enjoy. There are many opportunities to work together to improve community safety and explore new and innovative strategies to address the serious public safety issues facing the city, and we are confident that the Sheriff's Department will be an active and effective partner in that effort." – Imperial Beach City Manager Andy Hall This press release was produced by San Diego County Sheriff's Department.
