Natick Schools Cancels Most Events, Ends Public Use Of Buildings

NATICK, MA — Natick Public Schools has announced a new round of coronavirus-related cancellations, effectively closing off school grounds to the public. Starting Wednesday night, the district ended school field trips and use of school buildings for community events. The schools will also be off-limits after hours — for example, using the high school track for exercise. The district is also canceling parent-teacher organization meetings, community events at school buildings, and all student performances. Other events, like before and after-school activities for students and athletics, will go on as planned. "The cancellation of many meaningful activities will be disappointing to those who have worked very hard to prepare for them. However, we believe these steps are necessary given the guidance from the state to limit large gatherings, meetings, and events," Superintendent Anna Nolin and Health Director Jim White said in a joint statement on Wednesday. Nolin has not called off school yet, although two Natick High School students are presumed to have COVID-19 after their parent tested positive. The schools did undergo deeper cleanings over the weekend, and the students are under quarantine. Other local districts have had to cancel school. A Framingham student with a parent who is presumed to have COVID-19 may have exposed up to 95 other people. Wayland closed two schools on Wednesday, and Milford canceled school on Thursday and Friday after a staff member may have been exposed.
