MILTON, MA — Pierce Middle School was forced to close for at least two weeks following three confirmed coronavirus cases amongst students and staff. Parents and staff were sent a latter Sunday telling them the school would close to allow those with COVID-19 and those that came in contact with them time to quarantine. Interim Superintendent James Jette said the school had to cancel classes because the cases forced too many teachers to quarantine. "With three positive cases of COVID-19 at the Pierce within the past five days and the subsequent quarantine requirements of close contacts,we do not have the necessary staffing to safely keep the building open and adequately educate students in the hybrid model," Jette wrote. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Milton, like most of the region's districts, has used a hybrid learning model. But students at Pierce will have to switch to fully remote classes through at least Oct. 16. Jette said the decision will be revisited next week. Jette also urged parents to remain cautious and to make sure their children stay vigilant as well. "It is incumbent upon all of us to be vigilant," Jette said. "The need for socialization is real, but the need for safe behaviors is critical. Please wear a mask when you are out in public — even for recreational outdoor activities. All of us — educators, support staff, students, and families — want the Milton Public Schools to be a place for young people to learn, thrive and grow."
