SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — A Sarasota cyclist was critically injured after being hit by a pick-up truck near the intersection of Colonial Drive and Clark Road Tuesday afternoon, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.
The truck, driven by a 40-year-old Ellenton man, was heading north on Colonial Drive around 12:30 p.m. when it "lawfully stopped" for a stop sign at the corner of Clark Road (State Road 72), FHP said.
At the same time, the cyclist, a 46-year-old man, was traveling west on the S.R. 72 sidewalk approaching Colonial Drive.
As the truck made a right turn from Colonial Drive onto Clark Road, it hit the cyclist, who wasn't wearing a helmet. The cyclist was brought to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
The truck driver was given a traffic citation for failure to yield from a stop sign/causing great bodily injury or death, FHP said.
