Mosquito Control Spraying In Wayland Starts This Week

WAYLAND, MA — Enjoy the brief period of pest-free warmth this spring because mosquito season is just around the corner. The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project announced Thursday that it will begin spraying in Wayland soon. Helicopters will deploy the biological larvicide Bti in wetland areas one time between April 21 and May 6. The pesticide kills mosquito larvae before they hatch in late spring. "The Bti will be applied in a granular formulation by a helicopter flying low directly over the wetlands. Residents do not need to take any special precautions for this application," the mosquito control project said in a bulletin on Thursday. According to the mosquito control project, the following streets and areas in Wayland will see pesticide activity: Pod Meadow and the wetlands near Claypit Hill Road and Plain Road; Forty Acre Drrive; Glezen Land; and Concord Road. The state has not started testing for either West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Encephalitis since mosquito populations are so low. That testing will begin in June, according to the state Department of Public Health.
